How accurate are the VPS and VPN prices?
Prices are pulled from current public pricing pages (as of June 2026). VPS prices are for 24-month contracts; commercial VPN prices are per-user per month on the stated plan. Actual prices may vary — always verify before purchase.
Does the self-hosted VPN cost include bandwidth?
Contabo and Hetzner plans include unlimited or very high bandwidth allowances. OVH caps at 100 Mbps but does not meter volume at the entry level. For typical personal/family VPN use (a few GB/day), these limits are never hit.
What about the VPS cost for multiple users?
A single VPS handles all your users — WireGuard is lightweight. One Contabo VPS S supports 50+ simultaneous tunnels with minimal overhead. The cost does not scale per user, unlike commercial VPN subscriptions.
Is self-hosting really more private?
In most cases, yes. You own the exit IP and the keys. No third-party VPN provider can log, sell or subpoena your traffic. The caveat: your VPS provider does know your server exists. Choose a GDPR-compliant European provider (Contabo, Hetzner, OVH) and you remain under EU law.
What if I'm a beginner — is self-hosting worth it?
