Yes, Tailscale is free for personal use: the Personal plan costs $0 for up to 6 users, with unlimited user devices, 50 tagged resources and nearly every feature, as long as the use is non-commercial. Figures from tailscale.com/pricing, read on 27 October 2026. It stops being free in two cases: a 7th user, or any business use.

The question behind "is Tailscale free" is usually "will my setup stay free?". This page answers that with the four limits that actually bite, then shows what each way out costs.

What the free Personal plan includes

Limit on the Personal planValue (27 Oct 2026)Does it bite at home?
UsersUp to 6Only for large families or shared homelabs
User devices (computers, phones)UnlimitedNever
Tagged resources (servers, exit nodes, subnet routers)50 included, then $1/month eachRarely, unless you tag every container
ACL groupsUp to 3Rarely
Ephemeral resources (CI runners, k8s pods)1,000 minutes per monthOnly for CI pipelines
UseNon-commercialYes, if it is your company network

The key point most people miss: Tailscale counts people, not machines. A household of 4 with 25 devices stays free. A 7-person team with 7 laptops does not.

Will your setup stay free? Five common cases

  • You alone, laptop + phone + NAS + home server. Free. 1 user, devices unlimited.
  • Family of 5 sharing Plex, Home Assistant and the printer. Free. 5 users. Tip: share a single device with a guest (node sharing) rather than adding them as a user.
  • Homelab with a VPS exit node and a subnet router. Free. Both are tagged resources, far below 50.
  • Freelancer using Tailscale to reach client servers. Not free in principle: it is commercial use. Standard for 1 user is $8 a month.
  • Small company of 8. Standard: 8 x $8 = $64 a month, $768 a year at list price.

The three ways past the free plan, and what they cost

OptionMonthly costUsersWhat you give up
Tailscale Standard$8 per user ($56 for 7 users)UnlimitedNothing: managed, SSO, support
Headscale on a VPSabout €5.50 for the serverUnlimitedSome features (Funnel, polished admin UI), you maintain it
Mullvad add-on (for exit IPs, not users)$5 per 5 devicesn/aDoes not raise the user limit

Headscale is the open-source reimplementation of Tailscale's control server. The official Tailscale apps connect to it, there is no user cap and no licence fee: you pay for the server only. Compared with Standard, it breaks even from the first paying user for a business, and it is the only $0-per-user option once you pass 6 people.

Why Tailscale can afford a free plan

Your traffic goes peer-to-peer between your devices over WireGuard, not through Tailscale's servers, which only coordinate keys and connections (with DERP relays as a fallback). A free user is cheap to serve. Tailscale's own post How our free plan stays free adds the business reason: people who use it at home bring it to work, where companies pay per user. Plans have changed before (the free tier used to allow fewer users), so check the pricing page before you rely on a limit.

Free does not mean anonymous

Tailscale links your own devices; it has no servers to browse through. To hide your IP you need an exit node, either your own (free on the Tailscale side, see our exit node guide) or the paid Mullvad add-on. If all you want is a different IP with no machine to run, a commercial VPN such as Proton VPN (affiliate link), which also has a free plan, is the simpler tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tailscale free?
Yes, for personal use. The Personal plan is listed at $0, 'Free forever', with up to 6 users, unlimited user devices, up to 3 ACL groups, 50 tagged resources and 1,000 minutes a month of ephemeral resources (tailscale.com/pricing, read on 27 October 2026). The free tier is for non-commercial use.
Is Tailscale free for commercial use?
No. Tailscale's pricing FAQ says personal users have the free plan for non-commercial use. A company is expected to be on Standard ($8 per user per month), Premium ($18 per user per month) or Enterprise. A tailnet created with a custom domain starts with a 14-day Enterprise trial.
What happens when I reach 7 users?
The Personal plan stops at 6 users. Past that, Standard bills per user, so a 7-person tailnet costs 7 x $8 = $56 a month at list price. The cheapest alternative is to self-host the control server with Headscale on a small VPS, which has no user cap.
Do devices count against the free plan?
Your own devices do not: user devices (laptops, phones) are unlimited. What is capped is tagged resources, meaning servers, exit nodes and subnet routers that run under a tag instead of a person: 50 are included, then $1 a month each.
Is the Tailscale Mullvad exit node free?
No. The Mullvad add-on is a paid extra listed at $5 per month for every 5 devices. Your own exit node (a home machine or a VPS) costs nothing on the Tailscale side.
